Captain John Cleves Symmes, Jr.
Eureka Letter to "John"
January 29th, 1872

| I go no further John, now. Oh! for this day have I sought, & prayed, & striven, & fought - fought for
patience or success - for 8 long years. For this alone. For this, I rejected your advice to "turn my hand to something" that would help fill purse. For this have I lived so 'subdued,' & "made no sign." For this, & for this, & for this: And now I find the greatest place in my land openning its arms to clutch me; and the greatest place in all History - I see it - preparing for me. There was no thunder here, today! Is there any "damned [?] nonsense" here, John? January 30th - I have slept - soundly - upon it, & make the remarks again. "Ditto, to Mr. Burke." Your "political" letter came, & confirmed my 'suspicions' this is written before draft comes, but is part answer to the same[?]. Without this one months pay, P. says we could not have come to H. to live. Of Course - Of Course - Of Course you won't speak of any of this to Reporters. Hold hard!!! |
